Facebook privacy changes, useful or over-the-top?

fbprivacy

Which? Computing has announced that 48 per cent of people who were asked said that they were unable to keep up with the number of changes that Facebook has been making to its data and security settings. This has been an issue for many people for a while now, as doubt is cast over the effectiveness of the privacy settings, especially because they are changed very often, leaving users little notice or chance to prepare for the changes and ensure that their settings remain the same as they were before the changes.

However, the other side of the coin is that Facebook continues to make these changes so that it can give users better control over their own privacy, and who can see what on their accounts. Most people do not want just anyone to be able to browse through their photos and wall posts. They tend to only want people they know well to be able to see these things, people who they have as contacts on their O2 mobile phone or who they were friendly with at school. It could be argued that the changes are positive, then, as users are being given more control over their own accounts.

A spokesman for the social networking site has said that the same survey actually shows that 80 per cent of people in the UK do use the privacy controls that Facebook provides. This implies that they like the service and are using it to their advantage. While there are a lot of changes that users are having to keep up with, many think that the privacy settings are improving, which should ultimately help users feel safer when using Facebook. Updating the site helps it remain current and to address any issues that have come up, making sure that users remain happy.
